Dr MOINUDDIN KHAN SANDOZI, Professor of Pathology (Retired), Gandhi and Osmania Medical Colleges passed away after a brief illness on August 14, 2010 (3 Ramadhan, 1431H) in Hyderabad at the age of 87 years. He is survived by his 2 sons Dr Shakeel Sandozi and Dr Irfan Sandozi, and 3 daughters Dr Sameena Sandozi, Dr Tasneem Sandozi and Uzma Khatoon.
Professor Sandozi had an illustrious career as a physician in India and had written widely in his field. He was a graduate of Osmania University and had pursued both Law and Medicine. He was a Hematologist who was much ahead of his times when he returned to Hyderabad from USA and UK in 1956 with degrees of MS (Hematology, Northwester University, Evanston, IL, USA) and MRCP (Medicine, Edinburgh, UK). The subject did not exist as part of existing formal departments in Medical Colleges and Hospitals in India.
Although he was a clinician, he was instead appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology in Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad. His landmark orginal study on Liver and Bone Marrow Biopsies in malnourished children in India, published in the British Medical Journal, was the first to establish that protein is essential in the synthesis of Hemoglobin. The study is referenced in succession for over 30 years in the world renowned Wintrobe's Textbook of Hematology. For this work he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1970. In addition he had several publications in Indian and Asiatic journals. He was the Founder Member of the Indian Society of Hematology.
He was on the expert panel of Indian Council of Medical Research. He served as Guide to MD and PhD candidates of Osmania University. He was among the founding members of Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad. His years as a distinguished teacher and mentor are fondly remembered by his numerous students who are spread all over the world. He has been honored by various bodies of physicians. In addition, he was an avid reader and had varied interests that he pursued passionately. He had a remarkable memory and could speak engagingly on subjects as varied as History, Politics, Current Affairs, Literature, Quran and Islam along with scientific discussions on topics such as the latest developments in Stem Cell Research and Medicine. He spent his last years engaged in an indepth study of the Quran with a close circle of friends and was active in the weekly Quranic studies at his home upto 1 week before his sudden illness and departure from this world. He likely had a premonition of his death as he dwelled upon the following couplet in their last Quranic study meeting as recalled by his friends - Qaid-e-Hayat -o- Band-e-Gham asal mein donon ek hai Maut se pehle Aadmi gham se najaat paaye kyon.
